About SIDS and Kids Safe Sleeping
SIDS and Kids ‘Sleep Safe, My Baby’ is an evidence-based health promotion campaign developed for health professionals, childcare workers, new and expectant mothers, parents and anyone who cares for babies and infants. The campaign has been developed in conjunction with researchers from Australasia and internationally and provides up-to-date information about the evidence to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and fatal sleeping accidents.
A number of brochures have been produced to provide information on how to make up your baby’s cot safely, the importance of tummy time for development, safe wrapping and the transition from cot to bed.
In addition a number of information statements which provide the latest more detailed advice based on sound scientific evidence are available on specific topics including: sharing a sleep surface with your baby, smoking, wrapping or swaddling your baby, using a dummy, immunisation and home monitoring. Simply click on the Information Statement link to the left of this page to access these and others.
Since its inception in the early 1990s, the campaign has reduced the incidence of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy by 80% saving 8,959 babies’ lives. Vigilance is still required in delivering our Safe Sleeping message to the broad community as sadly the cause of sudden infant death syndrome remains unknown with more research into the cause is still needed.
