SIDS and Kids
SIDS and Kids is dedicated to saving the lives of babies and children during pregnancy, birth, infancy and childhood and supporting bereaved families. We deliver on our vision through world class research; evidence based education and bereavement support; and advocacy.
In Australia each year over 3,500 families experience the sudden and unexpected death of a baby or child, either through stillbirth or during the first month of life, from sudden unexpected death in infancy (SIDS or fatal sleeping accidents), SUDC (sudden unexpected death in childhood) or accident.
Sadly, for many of these deaths there is no known cause. For example, more than half the deaths of unborn babies during the last 8 weeks of pregnancy each year are unexplained.
To support families SIDS and Kids has a national Safe Sleeping Public Health Campaign which provides new and expectant mothers, carers and health care professionals with vital information on how to sleep babies safely and reduce the risk of SIDS and fatal sleeping accidents.
A range of bereavement support services are also available for families who have experienced the sudden and unexpected death of a baby or child, regardless of the cause. These services include a 24 hour bereavement support line, literature, peer support, workshops, counselling and online forums.
24 Hour Bereavement Support is available on Freecall 1300 308 307.
