ACCC product safety alerts

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and other government bodies have issued alerts about the following unsafe products.

Strollers4Parents—City Mini Single Stroller

ACCC says the stroller does not comply with the mandatory standard AS/NZS 2088:2000 and may pose an injury hazard to the child.

Button battery toy withdrawn from sale by Spotlight (Rainbow Light Wand)

Product safety officers at Consumer Protection found the toy, Rainbow Light Wand, broke open easily when dropped. This exposed the button batteries in the toy which poses a danger for young children if swallowed.

Safety warning over sweet-smelling scented erasers

SA Business Services and Consumers Minister Gail Gago issued a safety warning related to a gumball machine that dispenses colourful balls used by children as erasers.

Ms Gago said it is important parents and caregivers keep an eye on these and similar sweet-smelling products that imitate food and ensure they keep them out of reach of young children.

ACCC statement on asbestos in crayons

The ACCC has conducted testing on a range of wax crayons and identified traces of asbestos in the following products:

  • Dora the Explorer Personalized 32 pack crayons
  • Dora the Explorer Jumbo crayons
  • Arti Crafti 16 piece crayons
  • Peppa Pig 8 wax crayons

The ACCC does not believe that traces of asbestos in crayons presents a safety risk to consumers. Nevertheless presence of asbestos in crayons at any level is unacceptable because asbestos is a prohibited import and its presence means the product is not of acceptable quality. Also, the presence of asbestos triggers certain workplace safety obligations.

As a result the toys may liberate polyester fill during use and may not comply with the mandatory standard for toys for children up to and including 36 months of age (Australian Standard AS/NZS ISO 8124.1:2003, as amended by the regulation).
