SIDS and Kids is proud to be hosting an international conference in Sydney on 8, 9, and 10 October 2010.

The conference, "Precious lives: global collaboration in stillbirth and infant death” is the first joint conference of the International Stillbirth Alliance (ISA) and the International Society for the study and Prevention of Infant Death (ISPID).

Hosted in conjunction with the Australian and New Zealand Stillbirth Alliance (ANZSA) SIDS and Kids asks you to make a note in your diary to ensure you don’t miss out on being a part of this fabulous event bringing world class researchers, health professionals and bereaved families together in a collaborative effort of understanding and support.

More information to come soon at this site.

SIDS and Kids supports ABC TV’s decision to run a warning at the beginning of their series, ‘Bringing up Baby’.
From Thursday 26th February, until the series final, ABC TV will begin the program with the following advisory note to viewers:

“Some of the parenting practices advocated by the mentors in this series are not consistent with current, scientifically based, safe sleeping messages and can increase the risks of sudden and unexpected death
in infancy including SIDS and fatal sleeping accidents.

“The ABC advises that the term ‘maternity nurse’ used in this program does not signify a professionally qualified nurse but rather someone with experience in caring for babies and children.”

ABC TV will also include SIDS and Kid’s website address at the end of each show to provide viewers with access to current safe sleeping guidelines. Current safe sleeping practices recommended by the National Scientific Advisory Group of SIDS and Kids advise that babies are slept on their backs, with their faces uncovered, avoid exposing baby to tobacco smoke, and sleep in a safe environment in a separate sleep surface next to the parents bed for the first six to 12 months.

SIDS and Kids send a big thank you to Danny Green – our Dancing Star!!!

Danny Green, boxer-come-dancer extraordinaire, was the runner up in Series 8 of Dancing With The Stars!!  His impressive dance routines throughout the series won him a legion of new fans and raised awareness of the services SIDS and Kids deliver to the Australian Community.  Through telephone and text votes Danny raised $12,908.24.  The funds raised will help SIDS and Kids provide safe sleeping education to parents, health professionals and childcare workers, and bereavement support to families who suffer the tragedy of the sudden and unexpected death of a baby or child, regardless of cause.

SIDS and Kids are extremely grateful to Danny and his support, and look forward to seeing more of his fancy footwork!!  Thanks Danny…

Best Practice guidelines for autopsies in the sudden death of the young have been developed by TRAGADY (Trans-Tasman Response AGAinst sudden Death in the Young).

It has been endorsed by the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia and more recently approved by the Human Genetic Society of Australasia.

This valuable document arose from ongoing evidence of inconsistent and inadequate investigation of young sudden deaths.  It is hoped that it will lead to important beneficial changes for families whose child has died suddenly and unexpectedly.

Congratulations to Maxine Weber, Executive Director, SIDS and Kids South Australia who was awarded the SIDS and Kids Award for 2008 by the National SIDS Council of Australia.

Maxine has made a significant contribution to the work of SIDS and Kids over the last 31 years at state, national and international levels.  Her service to research, education and health promotion and bereavement support in the area of perinatal, infant and young child mortality has been outstanding.

At her retirement function on 12 September, Maxine was presented with the SIDS and Kids Award by Leanne Raven, CEO of our national office.  Maxine is the first founding member to retire from SIDS and Kids and she had always made a joke about “never wanting anything framed”.  We rose to the challenge and presented Maxine with a Red Nose Day clock in the hope that this will always remind her of the many friends she has at SIDS and Kids.

Maxine joins the ranks of our previous eminent recipients of the SIDS and Kids Award, Dr Susan Beale and Professor Roger Byard.

In a 2007 survey, Reader's Digest found that SIDS and Kids is Australia’s 12th most trusted charity.  Thank you to all our valued staff, supporters and volunteers for continuing to deliver vital services to all Australian families every year, and to the Australian community for their generous support.

A new publication has been added to the Bereavement page and is available to download.  It is the heartfelt account from a mother whose son was "Not Compatible with Life".  Please visit the bereavement page to download a copy.
