$65,000 Donation using the wonders of the internet

Internet entrepreneurs Brett McFall and Tom Hua used their online skills to raise $65,455 for 'Sids & Kids' and they did it inside just 3 weeks. They used no publicity; no middle men; no staff - just an email and an 'ugly' website. The money was raised through running a 2 day seminar for entrepreneurs, teaching how to start a business on the internet. By just sending an email to their friends and customers inviting them to come to the event, they attracted 265 people. All the tickets sold ($247 each) were dontated directly to 'Sids & Kids.' They handed over the cheque on-stage at the seminar and it was accepted by the director of 'Sids & Kids' Pauline Satchell.

"I've never seen money raised so easily, we literally had to do nothing for it. Brett and Tom simply predicted what they would do, sent their email, and handed us a cheque for $65,455. This could revolutionise the way we raise money forever," said Pauline.

This festive season BlueStone Personnel have taken the initiative whereby, in lieu of giving expensive corporate gifts to their Staff and Clients, they have made the decision to make generous donations to two carefully selected children's charities, one of which was SIDS and Kids.  They believe, as stated in their corporate Christmas card, that by making this donation, that it is more in keeping with the traditions and message that the Season brings to us all.

On Tuesday 18 October during a visit to Melbourne, the CEO of BlueStone Personnel, Darren Churchill, met with SIDS and Kids Executive, Pauline Satchell at which time a cheque in the amount of $7,500 was presented.  As a small token of appreciation Pauline presented Darren with a SIDS and Kids limited edition Super Hero Bear.

Introduction

SIDS and Kids is a leader in Australia in the field of infant health promotion, SIDS risk reduction and the prevention of infant sleeping accidents.  Our core function is to provide family support services and health promotion programs to communities throughout Australia and drive research to reduce the rate of infant mortality.  Our success has been achieved through the effort of numerous hard-working, dedicated, resourceful and entrepreneurial thinkers.

SIDS and Kids is a federated group of nine organisations motivated by an entrepreneurial spirit, strong brands, ethical values and passionate staff and volunteers. SIDS and Kids is largely self-funded, receiving no government funding, except for a grant to the ACT minor grants in Victoria and NSW. The organisation relies heavily on Red Nose Day fundraising and donations to fund its health promotion and research programs.  SIDS and Kids organisations employ around 60 full-time-equivalent staff throughout Australia and provide all services free of charge.

Each Member Organisation is autonomous in structure, however they work collectively to achieve the organisation's broad objectives. SIDS and Kids Member Organisations are located in New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Hunter Region and the Australian Capital Territory Region.

Within Australia there are 250,000 births per year. Over the past 14 years, through our health promotion program SIDS and Kids Safe Sleeping SIDS and Kids has been instrumental in reducing the incidence of SIDS by 84 per cent. Through our commitment to research and health promotion programs and in cooperation with health professionals, the organisation has saved the lives of over 4,000 Australian babies.

In 1999, Australian SIDS organisations formally expanded their wide range of services to include support for families whose children die suddenly and unexpectedly, from 20 weeks gestation through to two years of age, regardless of cause  (stillbirth, SIDS, neo-natal death, road deaths, drowning, fire, home accidents, fast onset illness, pre-existing condition not expected to be fatal, etc). In some States, the services provided are even broader and include miscarriage and children up to six years. Within this expanded category, on average, there are 212 deaths per month.

In March 2002, to reflect these expanded services, the organisation also embraced a new name – SIDS and Kids.
